Fundraising at Madrona School

Fundraising is extremely important to Madrona and MIT’s ability to provide critical services and support for students and teachers. Read other easy ways to earn money for Madrona.

MIT is a Washington State not-for-profit corporation, recognized under federal tax code 501c3. It is a non-profit so that we can solicit grant money and charitable donations. People who give money to MIT can write their donations off, and they can request matching donations from their employers. Have you explored whether your employer has a company match?

Fundraising opportunities at Madrona include:

While the weather is still nice, Madrona’s kids, teachers and families get out and race around the track in early October.  This event provides a good time for kids to compete for most laps per kid and per Center awards, as well as being a fundraiser that brings in enough money to pay for all classroom materials at Madrona.  Kids don’t sell product – they collect pledges for doing more for themselves and their school.

Madrona’s scrip program provides an opportunity for community members to support their school without actually donating a penny.  By purchasing retailers’ gift cards at school, instead of at the grocery store, families raise enough money every year to fund the school’s library, tech lab, and music program.  The introduction of an online purchasing portal in 2009 allows families to buy their gift cards from the comfort of their homes or offices, instead of going to school.  Online purchasing has also made a larger number of retailers’ cards available, so that almost every shopping need can be met through Scrip.

  • All For Kids - a Perfect Match

All for Kids contributes around $20,000 every year to Madrona.  This is enough to pay for classroom funds for every teacher at Madrona, assemblies, clubs and enrichment activities, the Food to Flowers recycling program, and MIT’s volunteer program manager.

Community members who want to know that 100% of their donation goes to Madrona have the opportunity to donate to the All for Kids fund.  This fund is eligible for employer matching, and is fully tax-deductible.   MIT’s Federal Tax ID is:  91-1423509.

Help us earn cash by bringing these recyclable items to Madrona: empty InkJet cartridges, empty laser cartridges used cell phones, laptops (please include power cords), PDAs/Palm Pilots (please include all accessories), IPODs (please include all accessories), www.cartridgesforkids.com. This program was created to give money back to participating schools. While collecting labels is good, making online purchases isboxtops better! For all those who do major purchases for work, home, or gifts, using the Boxtops4Education portal returns between 2 and 5% of the money you spend to the school. There are hundreds of retailers participating, including magazine subscription services, Dell Corporation, Office Depot, Barnes & Noble. The trick with this program is that you must always use the Boxtops4Education portal in order to get credit for the school. This takes a little education, but is well worth it. To sign up, go to: www.boxtops4education.com.

With this program, every time you use your Safeway Club Card, Madrona can receive up to 4% of your purchased amount. Visit www.escrip.com to sign up today! Remember to enter Group name: Madrona School and Group ID: 8564372.

Company Match

Many of the larger employers in the Puget Sound region have charitable programs. Often they involve matching an employee’s donation to a qualified charity or non-profit organization.

Each employer is different in how they determine what qualifies for matching funds. Contact your Human Resources department to investigate.

Calling all Microsoft employees

Join a new Madrona email list to learn more about how Microsoft is paying MIT $17 for every hour you volunteer at Madrona! (For example, your humble Web master’s efforts to build and maintain the Bear Facts Web site will earned MIT ~ $2,800 in 2006.) Microsoft is also matching any cash donation (i.e. All For Kids) over $25. Please contact Madrona parent, Frank Simorjay at frasim@microsoft.com for more information and to get connected.
